Lake Roberts opened in 1963 and is a 72 acre man made lake. It was named in memory of Austin A. Roberts, by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. The Lake Roberts area is home to hundreds of bird species. During the winter bald eagles make this area home. In the summer thousands of hummingbirds flock to the area. During migration there may be as many as ten different species of hummingbirds visiting Lake Roberts! Lake Roberts is full of wildlife, such as deer, elk, antelope, bear, turkey, and mountain lions, making this a hunters paradise. The Southwestern New Mexico area is also a great rock hounding area. Agate, obsidian, fluorite, copper, zeolites, jasper, gold and moonstones are just a few specimens that can be found in the area. Stop by a rock shop or contact a local rock club for information about the best locations for rock hounding.
